ID’s De Lille to move vote of no confidence in Mbeki and Cabinet
28-01-2008, 13H00, On Tuesday 12 February 2008, at the first sitting of Parliament after the State of the Nation Address, the Independent Democrats will move a motion of no confidence in President Thabo Mbeki and his Cabinet.
The ID will move the motion in terms of Section 102 (2) of the
Constitution, which reads,
‘If the National Assembly, by a vote supported by a majority of its members, passes a motion of no confidence in the President, the President and the other members of the Cabinet and any Deputy Ministers must resign.’
ID President Patricia de Lille says ‘President Mbeki and his Cabinet have failed the South African people.
‘The failure to plan, despite documented warnings almost 10 years ago, to avert a national electricity crisis, has already cost our country billions of rand in lost production and tax revenue, which threatens the job security and livelihoods of millions of South Africans,’ Ms De Lille says.
‘Government’s so-called contract with the people has been broken. Service delivery and the provision of basic needs will be severely hampered due to the failure of Government to ensure that we continue to have an affordable and steady flow of energy.
‘Our entire economy has been built around the comparative advantage of affordable and reliable electricity and the President and his Cabinet have essentially destroyed that advantage through incompetence and negligence,’ De Lille says.
‘This will have severe repercussions on our economic growth trajectory and foreign investment.
‘It is the innocent workers, who have kept their contract with Government through their daily toil and sacrifice, who will suffer the most,’ De Lille says.
‘It is for these reasons and many others, including the Government’s weak and often dishonest response to the crises of HIV/Aids, the Jackie Selebi debacle and arms deal corruption, that the Independent Democrats has lost confidence in the ability of this Government to deliver on its mandate to the people and our national interest.
‘In this time of crisis South Africa needs a Government that can inspire the people and reassure them that solutions can be found if we are united. This crisis affects every single one of us, whether rich or poor, black or white,’ De Lille says.
‘The ID has already put forward a Five Point Plan to deal with the energy crisis and we are convinced that our country can find the will and solutions to deal with this challenge, but only if we have a Government that is willing to partner in an open and transparent manner with the people.
‘This failure on the part of Government is entirely inexcusable and half-hearted apologies will never be a substitute for true political accountability. In the interests of democracy and good governance we call on all political parties to support our call for the removal of the present administration,’ says De Lille.
