ID WITHDRAWS AS CHAIRPERSONS OF PORTFOLIOS IN THE NORTHERN CAPE
21 November 2010 - Independent Democrats Parliamentary Leader and Member of Parliament, Mr JOE MCGLUWA says the decision results from several recent developments one of which was the financial offers to ID Public Representatives in the Northern Cape by the ANC...
Independent
Democrats MPL’s Schalk Lubbe and Ismail Obaray resigns as Chairpersons
of Portfolio Commitees.
The
National Management Committee of the Independent Democrats have this
week resolved to withdraw its two MPLs as Chairpersons of the Portfolio
Committees on Finance and Public Works/Safety & Roads in the
Northern Cape Legislature.
The
appointment of ID MPLs became necessary at the conclusion of the
National/Provincial Elections in April 2009, when the ANC only gained
19 seats in the legislature and 11 of ANC MPLs were appointed to the
Executive. Even though the ANC achieved a majority in the legislature,
they still required the assistance of the ID to chair two of the ten
portfolio committees in the legislature.
“This
decision comes as a result of several recent developments one of which
was the financial offers ranging from R240 000 to R2m made to ID
Public Representatives in the Northern Cape to resign from the ID and
join the ANC.” says ID
Parliamentary Leader Joe Mcgluwa.
The ANC has
clearly displayed their desperation to hold onto power at all costs and
the recent corruption allegations has further exacerbated the ANC woes
in the province.
In
addition, any continued association with the ANC in the province does
not serve the ID’s broader longer term vision of building a stronger
more united opposition.
