De Lille and Dugmore back Boks in key clash
2003-10-17. With the Springbok's crunch game against England only a day away, two of Cape Town's better-known politicians had some fun yesterday - and displayed not a little rugby knowledge - in predicting a winner.
Independent Democrat leader Patricia
de Lille said: "My advice to Rudolph Straeuli and captain Corne Krige
would be to tackle and defend like demons.
"Defence against the formidable English forwards will be a prerequisite for victory.
"Discipline will be another very important factor as foul play will play into the hands of the English sharpshooter Jonny Wilkinson, who will slot penalties from the grandstand if he has to."
De Lille said, with the whole country behind them, the team should approach this game with the confidence and resolve that has always been characteristic of Springbok rugby.
Determination and hard work will pay off and my prediction is 25-18 to the Springboks," said De Lille.
ANC provincial spokesman Cameron Dugmore said the match was too close to call. But victory was not beyond the reach of the Springboks.
"The team is different to the one that got whipped last year, but I hope Straeuli plays Derick Hougaard.
"I will be watching the game with fellow ANC comrades in Atlantis," said Dugmore.
Dugmore said the winning side would win by a try margin and the success of each team would depend on who converts all the penalties.
"I appeal to all South Africans to assist in the psychological undermining of the English," he said.
