De Lille impressive
2003-10-14. Our gratitude and appreciation to Patricia de Lille for being our guest speaker at the fifth annual general meeting of the Merchants Association of the Station Plaza Shopping Centre, held on October 9 in Mitchell's Plain.
We were overwhelmed by her sincerity
and humility as she high-lighted the social evils relating to HIV/Aids,
poverty and gender equity. She spoke with such gusto and passion, never
claiming any accolades for herself or the Independent Democrats, just
giving the stark reality of these issues.
It was an ideal opportunity for her to lobby support for her party, but instead she chose to address the pertinent issues facing the previously disadvantaged, who now have a chance to make an economic contribution.
It is both ironic and sad though, that embattled Justice Minister Penuell Maduna threatens to subpoena De Lille to the Hefer Commission hearings after she has chosen to tell the truth.
In the words of Judge King to Hansie Cronje during the match-fixing debacle: "The truth shall set you free!" Viva, Patricia, viva!
