We're showing our true colours

2003-10-10. The President, the "Arch" and politics's feistiest woman like you've never seen them before.

Patricia de Lille, Thabo Mbeki and Desmond Tutu, star alongside Springbok Nude Girls's Arno Carstens, billionaire Afronaut Mark Shuttleworth, golfing legend Gary Player and a host of other big names that have declared their allegiance in SA Rugby's official Rugby World Cup souvenir edition of Fifteen magazine.

The Boks hit the Perth turf in barely 24 hours. And for Bok supporters over there and here at home, there is an avalanche of green 'n gold regalia on the market, modelled exclusively for us today by Cape Town's aspirant Bok, Lungisa Lupindo, pictured with his class mates at Limasa Community School in Langa, and top Cape Town model Tracci McGregor.

The range of Bok apparel includes enough official garb and accessories to smother even the heftiest of fans with green and gold - from stickers and tattoos, fridge magnets, aprons, underwear and sunglasses to Bok tops and teddy bears for toddlers.

There are even Bok multi-media computer games to get stuck into between the big matches.

Topping the list of must-wear gear are the new "Our Blood is Green" wristbands. The marks of Bok allegiance sell for just R8 and profits go to the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Fund for rugby players who have been disabled by the game.

The gear, produced by a variety of manufacturers, is available at sports shops across the country

Messages from the Boks' No 1 fans

Archbishop Desmond Tutu:
"We were united as a nation on that glorious day when the Springboks won the World Cup. When the Boks take to the field in Australia, they will carry the hopes of all South Africans with them. Win or lose, may they be worthy of our support and let us unite behind them as proud South Africans."

Patricia de Lille, leader of the Independent Democrats:
"Rugby inspires emotions in our hearts that stir up the very notion of being South African. Go forth and show the true colours of freedom represented in the faces of every man in this squad. In parting, we say to you: 'Shosholoza!' We hold you in our hearts and will be with you in spirit."

Thabo Mbeki, president:
"This time it is our rugby players who go to far shores to test their skills and reputation against the global best. I urge all players to show that we are a nation not only of skill, determination and team work, but one of tolerance of outlook, consideration for human dignity, respect for others and fair play. In this spirit, we say: Hamba Kahle."

Mark Shuttleworth, first African in space:
"There are two things that bring our people together: business and sport. As a South African living abroad there are certain things that are so South African it gives me a nostalgic twinge every time I see them. It gladdens my heart whenever I see our boys running out on to the field. Go Bokke!"
