Fishermen being ignored - De Lille
2003-09-12. The Independent Democrats say the Western Cape's ANC-headed poverty relief programme is ignoring the province's poor fishermen.
And assistance is provided only in
areas where it can be given through ANC councillors.
Social welfare and poverty alleviation MEC Marius Fransman, an ANC executive member, denies the charges of Independent Democrats leader Patricia de Lille, who says many families are without income because the government isn't extending fishing quotas.
But when community leaders in Hout Bay, Ocean View and Kalk Bay turn to Fransman's department for food parcels and other assistance they are ignored, De Lille says.
"The communities have made numerous requests to the MEC and to date they have not even received acknowledgement of their requests," she said.
