Lennit Max leads ID in Western Cape
2003-09-15. Armed with whistles and flags, more than 600 people attended the official Western Province launch of the Independent Democrats yesterday and elected former provincial police commissioner Lennit Max as the regional chairman.
Maria Hlangwane was elected deputy
chairwoman, Florence Batyi, a former ANC Women's League chairwoman in
Beaufort West, was voted in as provincial secretary. Jacobus Lochner
from Plattekloof was elected provincial treasurer. Another former ANC
member, Mzwandile Manjiya, was made provincial policy convener, and
Rodney Lentit was elected provincial convener.
"These are the people who will secure the battle of winning the Western Cape for the Independent Democrats in the 2004 election," said ID leader Patricia de Lille said.
Whistles reverberated through a packed hall in Pinelands as she said the ID would continue to blow the whistle on corruption and crime.
Since the ID's launch five months ago, almost 25 000 people have registered as members. The Western Cape has more than 5 000 members. - Sapa
