2003-09-10. Patricia de Lille has been involved in politics for the past 25 years.
She started out as a shop steward for
the SA Chemical Workers Union while working at a paint factory in
Epping.
In 1983, De Lille was elected to serve on the union's national executive structure. Five years later, she was elected vice-president of the National Council of Trade Unions.
Two years later, she was elected to the national executive on the Pan Africanist Congress.
After the 1994 elections she took up a seat in the National Assembly and was appointed chairwoman of parliament's portfolio committee on transport.
De Lille, who was recently installed as chancellor of the Durban Institute of Technology, also serves on the boards of the Fikilela HIV/Aids project, Age-In-Action, Diocesan College, Nazareth House, St Joseph's Home, the Helen Suzman Foundation, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, the Caring Network, the Impumelelo Innovation Awards, and HIV/Aids Babies Battling HIV/Aids Trust.
She is a member ofthe Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption and the African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption.
Earlier this year she used the "floor crossing" legislation to resign from the PAC, kept her seat in the National Assembly and launched her own party, the Independent Democrats.
