The Independent Democrats has experienced an unprecedented 1000%
increase in its voter base in the by-election in Riviersonderend.
ID President Patricia de Lille says ‘it has become clear that the
ID will be canvassing for the government of the Western Cape in
2009.’
In last year’s Municipal Elections in Riviersonderend, the ID had
38 votes, but today the party has 401.
The ANC got 47% in 2006 and 48% this year, a 1% increase. The DA
got 44% last year and they now have 35%, a drop of 9%.
The ID got 2% in 2006 – just 38 votes – and this time recorded a
phenomenal 1000% increase to 401
votes.
The ANC and the DA ‘have remained stagnant and lost support,’ says
De Lille.
‘The question then is – where did the ID get the bulk of its
voters from?’
‘The answer is simple – the ID has attracted people who have been
outside of the political spectrum for too long. ‘They had become
disillusioned and felt disenfranchised by the ANC/DA and have found a
safe home in the ID,’ De Lille says.
‘This has been a trend in every by-election the ID has contested,
where voters that had given up hope come out to the polls in
droves.
‘These people have sent out a very clear message by voting for the
ID. I want to thank them for coming out in support of a new plan and a
new vision for the Western Cape,’ says De Lille.
‘That vision is the Independent Democrats - they have come home to
the ID.
‘This is a powerful sign of things to come,’ De Lille says.
