[ID]SAFA SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE MISSING MILLIONS

05 December 2011 - Independent Democrats Spokesperson on Sport, Mr JOE MCGLUWA MP says a clampdown on corruption in sport is long overdue and we further appeal to sports minister Fikile Mbalula to act against Safa in the same manner applied in the Cricket SA debacle in November this year by appointing a committee of enquiry to further investigate these allegations and take the necessary remedial steps...

The Independent Democrats (ID) Spokesperson on Sport Mr Joe Mcgluwa MP says the South African Football Association (Safa) should be held accountable for the missing millions of rand generated by sales of Bafana Bafana jerseys for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

This follows a report in the Sunday Times over the weekend which makes reference to a deal Safa initially signed with Adidas in 2003, with a clause guaranteeing it a minimum of approximately 32 million rand from the millions of shirts sold. This money was allegedly given to an entity called Safa Legal and Management (SLAM) of which Safa owns 51% and Stanton Woodrush owns 49%. According to the article, Safa officials did not dispute the 2-million rand cut it had received from SLAM.

‘It is disturbing that no Safa officials were appointed directors of SLAM,’ states Mr Mcgluwa.

‘It is a disgrace that Safa’s maladministration should be at the expense of transformation and developing among talent in previously disadvantaged communities where in this case Safa projects the image of being a law unto itself.

‘In comparison to its sister bodies in neighbouring countries, Safa has an exorbitant cash flow, but the poorest performance in administration, management and field performance.

‘We call upon the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) of which Safa is an affiliated member to launch an immediate investigation into the missing funds,’ says Mcgluwa.

Prior to the Sport indaba held last month, Sascoc president Gideon Sam has reportedly said stricter policies and policing is necessary to weed out the corruption seeping into South African sport especially larger sporting bodies, which relied little on government funding, would need to start answering for their actions.

‘A clampdown on corruption in sport is long overdue and we further appeal to sports minister Fikile Mbalula to act against Safa in the same manner applied in the Cricket SA debacle in November this year by appointing a committee of enquiry to further investigate these allegations and take the necessary remedial steps.

‘Safa sponsors like the South Africa Breweries (SAB) who invested approximately 500 million rand in its sponsorship of Bafana Bafana and for infrastructure of South African townships for the 2010 World Cup; and ABSA should apply stricter rules in their approach on reviewing and request a detailed audit on the spending of funds as well as Safa’s role in transformation and support of local industry, and retract or curb funding should any malpractice be detected,’ Mcgluwa says.
