ID SLAMS R11M OLYMPIC WASTAGE
14H00, 17 AUGUST 2008-ID MP Lance Greyling has slammed 'the completely unnecessary wastage of R11m on a publicity project to showcase South Africa at the Beijing Olympic Games.
ID MP Lance Greyling has slammed 'the completely unnecessary
wastage
of R11m on a publicity project to showcase South Africa at the
Beijing
Olympic Games.
'We need to take a serious look at the kind of wasteful
expenditure
that has gone on around the Olympic Games. Now Makhenkesi Stofile,
the
Minister of Sport, seems to have wasted R11m of taxpayers' money on
a
publicity expo for SA,' Mr Greyling says.
'The organisation of the expo has been a shambles and the ID urges
the
Portfolio Committee on Sport to summon the Department to come and
explain to us why so much money has been squandered on an
opportunity
to market our country.
'It is important to entrench accountability so as to avoid these
kinds
of incidents also happening at the World Cup,' says Greyling.
Greyling says Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri has
still
not answered the ID's question surrounding the SABC's extravagant
delegation to the Olympic Games.
The ID questioned the SABC's intention to send a large
non-operational
delegation to the Beijing Olympics at the taxpayer's expense.
