ID slams Zille decision to cut food to Delft Evictees
30-04-2008, 13H10, Calls on Mayor to tap into her Discretionary Fund
Rodney Lentit, ID Western Cape Provincial Secretary, has slammed the
decision by Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille to cut food supplies to over
300 families evicted from the N2 Gateway Project in Delft two months
ago.
Food supplies to the evictees will come to a stop on Thursday, 1
May.
'Winter is coming and it is heartless to cut off the feeding scheme as
the families are living in tents and have nowhere to cook. The ID is
extremely concerned about the impact this ruthless decision will have
on babies, the elderly and sick, who are already living in harsh
conditions,' says Mr Lentit.
'It was the irresponsible action of DA Councillor Frank Martin that
created this humanitarian disaster in the first place and the ID is
still waiting for Mayor Helen Zille and the city to discipline him for
his actions.'
Lentit says that when he last visited the area, 'many of the residents
told me they had lost their jobs because their possessions were not
safe on the pavements and they had to look after them all day.
'Surely the Mayor must know that the 300 families who have suffered as
a result of Martin's actions will not simply disappear into thin air if
they are starved out,' Lentit says.
Now the ID Western Cape Provincial Secretary is calling on Zille 'to
use some of the money from the several millions in her Discretionary
Fund to prevent our people from starving.
'It is too dangerous for them to cook in tents and the ID is looking
for a rescue plan until the families have permanent structures.
Otherwise, their plight will continue to be on our conscience,' says
Lentit.
