‘Powers of Commission still need to be clarified to avoid Government
infighting,' says Greyling
The Independent Democrats has welcomed the announcement today of the new national planning commissioners. ID Spokesperson on national planning Lance Greyling, stated that “these appointments are long overdue and we urge the commission to start working immediately. Decisions are currently been made by many government departments that will lock our country into a development path for the next few decades and it is vital that all of these decisions are made within the framework of an holistic vision for the country.”
“The ID believes that the composition of the commission includes a broad spectrum of expertise and we welcome the fact that a number of commissioners will be focusing on sustainability issues such as water, energy and climate change. The one sector which seems to be under-represented, however, is the labour sector, particularly in relation to the number of business people that have been included on the commission.”
“The ID is also concerned that the power of this commission has not been sufficiently clarified, particularly in relation to the planning sections of other government departments and most importantly the economic development Ministry. The ID maintains that the planning commission needs to be more than a glorified think tank and its plans must be thoroughly integrated into the work of government if we are going to ensure that our country’s development proceeds in a synergistic manner. The ID is however worried that unless the lines of authority are sufficiently clarified and enforced there could be paralysis in government as various groupings will simply end up contesting the policy space.”
