ID’S JOE MCGLUWA CAUTIONS OPPOSITION PARTIES TO FOCUS ON UNITY

8 MARCH 2010-‘DA must distance itself from Theuns Botha’s comments,’ says Mcgluwa

‘DA must distance itself from Theuns Botha’s comments,’ says Mcgluwa

ID National Organiser Joe Mcgluwa says opposition parties ‘must focus on unity if we want to be up to the task of uniting in the interests of all South Africans, putting their interests before our own.

‘For its part, the Independent Democrats remains committed to strengthening the opposition in South Africa,’ Mr Mcgluwa says.

‘We therefore note with disappointment the statement by reelected DA Western Cape Chairperson Theuns Botha about the well-wishes we sent the DA Congress, which were read out at the event.’

Instead of acknowledging 'the ID’s graciousness' in sending the letter, Botha used it as an opportunity to attack the ID, saying,

“[The ID]… should not expect to get a letter from us in return. “[the DA]… will do everything possible to gain a majority in all the municipalities in the Western Cape.”

‘We are not surprised at the baasskap mentality of Theuns Botha and we hope that the DA will distance itself from his childish comments,’ says Mcgluwa.

‘Instead of launching an attack on the Independent Democrats, Botha should have concentrated his energy on healing the divisions in the DA in the Western Cape.

‘We cannot become bogged down by the politics of petty egos like Botha’s, which do nothing to bring us together. Our duty is to the South African people – nothing more, nothing less,’ Mcgluwa says.
