ID WANTS SAA BOSS KHAYA NGQULA SUMMONED BEFORE COMMITTEE

16 NOVEMBER 2008-‘Public Enterprises squanders billions of taxpayers’ money every year,’ says Greyling

‘Public Enterprises squanders billions of taxpayers’ money every year,’ says Greyling

Lance Greyling, ID spokesperson for Public Enterprises, wants SAA CEO Khaya Ngqula summoned before the parliamentary Public Enterprises Committee to answer allegations that Lance Epstein, a private investigator contracted by the airline to investigate fraud and luggage theft, is in possession of 2 million Voyager miles.

‘We in the Independent Democrats want Ngqula to come clean on these allegations. Recent restructuring at the airline has already cost 2 000 employees their jobs,’ Mr Greyling says.

‘The ID sincerely hopes these allegations are untrue, especially since South African taxpayers have already forked out R2.8 billion to SAA over the past two years.

‘This money would be better spent on making a real difference in the lives of our people and is desperately needed to take on the huge challenges of unemployment, poverty, education, crime, corruption and HIV/Aids,’ says Greyling.

Greyling says the Public Enterprises Department ‘has been a disastrous failure for many years and under the stewardship of Alec Erwin went from bad to worse.

‘Public Enterprises is squandering billions of taxpayers’ money every year and we call on Minister Bridgitte Mabandla to focus on the kind of mismanagement and incompetence we are seeing at management level, while avoiding a situation where more ordinary employees lose their jobs,’ Greyling says.

The ID spokesperson cited Eskom’s failure to deal adequately with the energy crisis and its consequent paying of performance bonuses to those responsible, ‘as just another example of the problems in the Department.’

Other examples included the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR), ‘which has thus far seen R8 billion squandered on dangerous and experimental technology, and Denel, which is sapping billions of rand in taxpayers’ money to further an immoral weapons manufacturing industry in South Africa, which creates very few jobs.

‘SAA has a long history of mismanagement and paying high salaries and bonuses to its executives,’ says Greyling.
