ID – ‘ANC BULLDOZED ITS NOMINATIONS ONTO INTERIM SABC BOARD’
2 JULY 2009-De Lille withdraws the ID’s support
De Lille withdraws the ID’s support
ID President Patricia de Lille says the Independent Democrats has withdrawn its support for the interim SABC Board ‘because the ANC has bulldozed its names through.’
The Communications Portfolio Committee meeting was called today so that members could agree on 5 names for the interim SABC Board, as well as on the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson.
‘Today’s process in the Communications Portfolio Committee meeting, which dragged on from 12:30 pm until after 4 pm, was completely flawed and this is why we have withdrawn our support,’ Ms De Lille says.
‘The ANC finally wanted us as opposition parties together to put in one name and at this point the ANC agreed to the name the IFP had put forward.
‘The ANC disregarded every one of the five names put forward by every other opposition party, except for the one name put forward by the IFP, which made it clear that the two parties had caucused before the meeting,’ says De Lille.
‘To make matters worse the ANC also cast aspersions on some of the nominations by opposition parties.
‘We have missed an important opportunity to have an interim SABC Board that reflects some of the great leaders in our nation and to get the politics out of the public broadcaster,’ De Lille says.
