De Lille to Moderate International AIDS Vaccine Workshop
2003-10-28. Independent Democrats leader, and HIV/AIDS activist Patricia de Lille, departs for Thailand today to represent South Africa at an International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) inter-country parliamentarians workshop.
De Lille will join 40 other parliamentarians from Asia, Europe and
Africa to discuss the challenge of HIV/AIDS with a special focus on
preventive vaccines for the pandemic.
The 2 day conference will see De Lille address scientists and other eminent experts on HIV/AIDS and Vaccine from the USA and UN agencies.
De Lille will also moderate a discussion on the role of political leaders in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. "I want to define the role that members of parliament should play in the fight against the pandemic. Parliament must move away from wearing ribbons, signing pledges and lighting candles to a more focused strategic, hands on approach to fighting the pandemic," De Lille said.
The IAVI, of which De Lille is a member, is committed to speeding up the discovery and distribution of a safe, effective and accessible AIDS vaccine.
"Developing an AIDS vaccine to save lives and economies will be one of the world's greatest achievements and to ignore the opportunity of finding a vaccine would be a complete failure", De Lille said.
Discussion on the AIDS vaccine will include the issues of streamlining the regulatory review process for vaccine trials and approval, manufacturing the vaccine for a global demand, pricing and eliminating the stigma and gender restraints that could block the trailing of a vaccine.
