Independent MARKDATA Opinon Poll indicates groundwell of support for the Independent Democrats "The fastest Growing political party in South Africa"
2004-04-07. Independent research company, Markdata, indicated today in its findings of a poll amongst the South African electorate which has yet to be published that the Independent Democrats is the fastest growing political party in South Africa.
In a survey conducted toward the end of February and the beginning of
March 2004, the Independent Democrats garnered ten percent (10%) of
support amongst South African voters that participated in the
survey. This research represents the most recent South African
election poll conducted.
In response to a question, specifically on the Independent Democrats, 8% of the total sample interviewed confirmed that their vote will be cast for the Independent Democrats and also indicated their enthusiasm for the Independent Democrats as an alternative to other parties contesting this election.
A further 13% of interviewees indicated that although they admired the ID and its leader, Patricia de Lille, their vote was as yet undecided.
The Markdata poll, the most recent poll released, indicated without doubt that the Independent Democrats have, during its short life, made significant inroads into the South African political landscape. The ID expects that its vote will extend well beyond the 8% confirmed vote as shown by the poll, to include a large percentage of the as yet undecided vote.
The formation of the Independent Democrats was announced a year ago by leader Patricia de Lille on 26 March 2003.
Since then, the Independent Democrats has come a long way in a very short space of time. The ID presently has over 60 000 signed up members, a fully fledged policy framework, party structures, offices and is contesting the 2004 elections nationally and in all nine provinces.
