Independent Democrats shoots up to share third place as the largest political party in South Africa
2004-08-27. According to the latest SABC / Markinor Poll on Current Support for political parties, the Independent Democrats (ID) has shot up in the ranks of the main opposition parties. The ID secured 1, 74% of the total vote in the April 14 General Election.
Now, in the first SABC/Markinor Survey since the elections, the ID has
increased its support to 3%, placing the party above the United
Democratic Movement (UDM) and on par with the Inkatha Freedom Party
(IFP), making the ID possibly the third largest party in South
Africa.
'The survey confirms that there is a healthy opposition spirit in South Africa and the Independent Democrats are the most likely party to harness it. Based on the SABC/ Markinor Poll the ID has been given a first-class bill of health. The future looks very bright indeed' said Patricia de Lille, Leader of the Independent Democrats.
