Ignorance of the Law or rule is no excuse, says ID
2004-11-12. "The way in which parliament is going now makes a mockery of the Code of Ethics. For the committee to say that because of the company was dormant the breach is less serious, contradicts the Code that explicitly require that even dormant companies must be declared," this was the stern warning issued by Patricia de Lille, Leader of the Independent Democrats, during the tabling of committee report on Allegations of non-disclosure by Members of Parliament today.
Addressing the last sitting of Parliament, De Lille challenged Members
of Parliament to accept responsibility for their business interests and
to declare them before the cut-off date.
Referring to Note 3 in the explanatory notes De Lille said: The explanatory note states that all directorship or partnership must be disclosed, including those dormant companies. Breach of the Code means that you did not declare your dormant company in the public Register. She further said that members are advised to personally ensure that the information contained in the Registrar of Companies is correct.
The ID believes that ignorance of the law or rule is no excuse and that MPs are obliged to comply.
