Agricultural Credit Scheme Fund, a step in the right direction
2004-10-27. The Independent Democrats welcome the announcement that R1 billion has been set aside to revive the Agricultural Credit Scheme.
This is a positive step towards assisting the long neglected emerging
farmers. Although the funds set aside will not solve all the financial
problems facing land restitution, the accessibility of loans to
emerging farmers will enable this neglected sector with the means to
either acquire land or expand their farming activities. The more
emerging farmers are absorbed into the formal economy, the more jobs in
the informal sector will be created, as farming on this scale is labour
intensive.
"The ID hopes that, unlike other funds which end up financing consultants and not the intended beneficiaries, the fund, as announced by the minister, will be carefully managed in order to benefit the intended beneficiaries", said Lance Greyling, ID Agricultural Spokesperson.
