ID LOCAL GOVERNMENT STRATEGIC WORKSHOP
2004-10-12. The Independent Democrats held a strategic workshop in Cape on the 11th and 12 of October 2004 under the theme: "Taking Politics Back to The People" The workshop for the first time brought under one roof ID public representatives from all three spheres of government; National, Provincial and Local to discuss how the ID can service communities effectively on the local government level.
A wide range of issues was discussed at the meeting, with the ultimate
objective of taking forward the ID's vision of bridging the divides in
our society. Inputs were received from different experts, national and
provincial Members of Parliament and particularly the 39 Councillors
who recently chose the ID as their new political home.
The challenges facing local government in discharging its Constitutional responsibility of providing people with effective and affordable services has put the ID's vision of "bridging the divides and taking politics back to the people" at the heart of this strategic workshop. The ID is now represented in various municipalities across the country and has vowed to lead the way in ensuring that it is no longer business as usual in local government.
Addressing the workshop, ID Leader, Patricia de Lille, said the ID has resolved to ensure that service delivery, public participation in decision-making and providing oversight becomes the new way of doing business in this sphere of government, stressing that the challenge for all participants it the workshop was to project a distinct ID identity at the local government level.
The local government strategic workshop also established a Local Government Advisory Committee to begin the preparations for the next local government elections.
