ID STATEMENT ON MPs AND JUDGES PAY INCREASE
2004-10-07. The Independent Democrats note that the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of the Public Office Bearers has made a recommendation to President Thabo Mbeki for a 7% pay increase for Members of Parliament and the Judiciary.
"The ID respects the recommendations made by the commission to the
President. However, we appeal to the president that when studying the
recommendations of the commission to consider the reigniting of
tensions still simmering between government and civil servants and to
not create an impression that MPs and the Judiciary are treated better
that other civil servants," said Patricia de Lille, Leader of the
Independent Democrats.
The ID believes there should be even-handedness when dealing with the issue of remuneration. Politicians and judges are servants of the people and they should not be given preferential treatment when it comes to pay increases.
