Independent Democrats statement on Parliamentary travel voucher scam investigation
2004-10-26. The Independent Democrats find the lack of progress in the Parliamentary Travel Voucher scam investigation inexcusable and call for swift action from law enforcement agencies investigating the matter in order to restore the tarnished image of parliament.
"South African taxpayers deserve an explanation. It is the duty of
parliament, whose image and that of innocent Members of Parliament are
at stake. The ID calls for the Speaker to provide taxpayers and the
innocent MPs with the information regarding progress made in this
regard. The sooner, the Speaker's office does this, the better for the
tarnished image of parliament and that of the MPs. Parliament and its
members should be focusing on the credibility and integrity of the
institution rather than frivolous debates about having an Adult Shop on
the door step of parliament", said Avril Harding, Chief Whip of the
Independent Democrats.
The ID believes the time has come for parliament to distance itself from the allegation that it is derailing the investigation. The law enforcement agencies must conclude their investigation without interference.
