Transformation of the Judiciary is long overdue, says the ID

2004-10-26. The Independent Democrats has noted with shock the statement attributed to the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Chief Whip, Mr Koos van der Merwe who was quoted as saying "white men need no longer apply for judicial posts, particularly when they are up against black candidates"

The ID believes that transformation of the judiciary should be handled appropriately due to its sensitivity. The ID questions whether the IFP is for or against transformation. Will Van der Merwe distance himself from the statement and allow the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), tasked with the interviewing of the candidates to carry on with its mandate?" Patricia de Lille, Leader of Independent Democrats, asked.

The ID believes that transformation of the judiciary is long overdue and calls for frank and honest discussion on the matter to ensure the elimination of racial tensions as recently witnessed in the Cape Provincial Division.
