TSVANGIRAI'S ACQUITTAL A VICTORY FOR OPPOSITION POLITICS AND INDEPENDENT JUDICARY IN ZIMBABWE
2004-10-15. The Independent Democrats congratulate Mr Morgan Tsvangirai, Leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) for his strength and visionary commitment to bringing about democratic changes in Zimbabwe, and on his acquittal on treason charges.
"The acquittal of Mr Tsvangirai, who right from the onset proclaimed
his innocence, is a victory for opposition politics in Zimbabwe and a
cause for celebration in the entire SADC region. This judgement is also
a victory for the independent judiciary and democracy in Zimbabwe where
the ruling ZANU-PF is hell-bent on overriding the independent state
institutions in a bid to consolidate its power and to crash the
opposition," said Patricia de Lille, Leader of Independent
Democrats.
The ID has been following the trial very closely and was relieved to note that at least there is still a semblence of an independent judiciary in Zimbabwe. The ID wishes the MDC well and believes the party will now be able to focus its attention and resources on the coming elections.
