‘Skwatsha’s strategy is very simple,’ says Jenner

Izak Jenner, the ID Western Cape Provincial Chairperson, has described
ANC Provincial Secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha’s comments at the press
conference in Drakenstein today as ‘predictable.
‘Skwatsha and his faction in the ANC are fighting for their political survival. They are using the walkover period to try to redress their abysmal scorecard in terms of the amount of municipalities they control in the Western Cape,’ says Mr Jenner.
‘The desperation of Skwatsha and his allies in the ANC follow revelations that his former political partner James Ngculu is now with Ebrahim Rasool and they are actively working in the branches of the ANC to unseat Skwatsha.’
Jenner says Skwatsha’s strategy 'is simple.
‘He has promised defectors positions ahead of ANC comrades in a desperate bid to show the national ANC that he is not the incompetent fool that Ncgulu and Rasool make him out to be,’ says Jenner.
‘It is clear that he is trying to divert attention away from the divisions in the ANC by attacking the ID. In Drakenstein he will have to answer to the ANC caucus as to why it is that defectors to the party will now be given mayoral committee positions ahead of longstanding party members,’ he says.
Regarding his resignation from the ANC in early 2006, Jenner says he is one of hundreds of thousands of South Africans who ‘lost faith in the ANC.
‘As a member of the REC West Coast of the ANC I resigned in good-standing because I was not prepared to serve under the incompetent leadership of Mcebisi Skwatsha.
‘He must mark these words very carefully because the ANC is still dependent on us in two municipalities,’ Jenner says.
‘I am an elected leader of the Independent Democrats, not by virtue of factionalism, but through the voice of the people. I am not working under Skwatsha’s discipline, but under the discipline of the ID.
‘In the case of Drakenstein, it was an ID caucus position to reconstitute the council with the DA,’ Jenner says.
‘The defectors have answered the question over the 5 spoiled ballot papers when the council was reconstituted.’
