Chabaan and Sasman have lied again

6-09-2007, 12H30, The NPP hoax continues as the NPP signs up phantom councillors

MP Haniff Hoosen, the Secretary-General of the Independent Democrats, says ‘the ID has continued to expose the National People’s Party’s provincial campaign of intimidation, bribery and lies.’

Just seconds after the NPP announced Metro Councillor Georgina Sass had crossed the floor to them, Ms Sass phoned the party to say this was ‘a blatant lie.’

A second councillor, meanwhile, Ms Nosizwe Dase, has requested an urgent meeting with the ID’s Secretary-General ‘to clear the air’.

In another incident, Jeff Swartbooi, the ID Mayor of Oudtshoorn, has laid charges of intimidation against the NPP.

‘Up until now, in spite of their use of intimidation of the worst kind, the NPP has not gained any concrete results,’ says Mr Hoosen.

‘The media must ask why it is that almost all of the councillors NPP leader David Sasman announced had crossed the floor to his party could not make their press conference for what he called “personal reasons”’.

'The NPP has embarked on a deliberate misinformation campaign, claiming to have councillors when they appear not to have them. Their main aim is to sow confusion and division amongst other political parties in order to feed their sinister motives,’ Hoosen says.

‘Once again they have attempted to bluff the media. Their claims that they would take the city have come to nothing. To see just how badly the NPP has poisoned politics in the Western Cape, you only need to take a look at their leadership.’

1.     Faried Stemmet, the Chief Executive of the NPP, appears to be moonlighting. ID information is that Stemmet is not only the CE of the NPP, but also a State Prosecutor in George.

‘We call on the NPA to investigate,’ says Hoosen.

2.     Badih Chabaan, who is alleged to have bribed city councillors to cross the floor to the NPP.

3.     David Sasman, who was miraculously healed of his Agoraphobia the second he lost his case against the Independent Democrats. Sasman now has no problem with addressing press conferences, in spite of an earlier fear of crowds.

‘Of the five that the NPP says have crossed the floor in the Metro, two of them, Aaron Kallie and Abdulla Omar, were expelled from the party before the floor crossing window period opened and they lost their seats,’ says Hoosen.

‘There is prima facie evidence in the Speaker’s investigation in the city that Omar facilitated the so-called ‘loan meetings’ between Chabaan and other councillors.

‘In addition, of the four named in the Drakenstein Municipality, one, Jacquline Noland, was expelled from the Independent Democrats. Arrie Krotz was also expelled.’

‘What is important now is that the ID remains stronger than ever in the Metro as part of the coalition. The outrageous claims made by the NPP that they will destroy the ID in the Metro have come to nothing,’ says Hoosen.

‘It also appears that Mr Chabaan has not been able to attract enough DA Councillors to his party to have an affect on the coalition. This leaves the ID and the DA in pole position to continue the stable and good governance in the City of Cape Town.

‘The right-thinking and loyal members of our caucus will not fall for Badih Chabaan’s tricks,’ Hoosen says.

‘The rest of our caucus remains stable and committed to the City of Cape Town Government.’
