De Lille – ‘Elvis’ passing a loss to the ID and our country’
24-07-2007, 12H00, ID President Patricia de Lille has described Elvis Mndebele, an ID Councillor in Mbombela Municipality in Mpumalanga, who passed away yesterday at noon, as ‘a man with a heart of gold.’
Elvis succumbed to meningitis.
‘Losing a man like Elvis Mndebele, a person with a sense of humanity that touched each and every one of us, is a loss to the ID and our country. I will never forget when he once told me very earnestly, ‘You are a man, Patricia, and you can teach men a lot about their responsibilities’,’ Ms De Lille says.
‘But I think Elvis taught us all so much about caring and devotion to our families and the poor.’
Roelf Pretorius, an ID Councillor in Govan Mbeki Municipality, also in Mpumalanga, says ‘Elvis served the people tirelessly to expose irregularities in his Municipality and he fought to get public representatives to do their work and deliver.
‘He was no ordinary person and his commitment to the people was incredible.
‘Elvis was very ill just before the ID National Congress, but he still drove all the way to Cape Town just so that the other ID delegates that travelled with him could attend.
Elvis, who was 59-years old, leaves his wives, Anita and Maggie, and 13 children. His daughter Colette today described him ‘as a very good father to all of us. He was loving and caring and was always there for us when we needed him and he was always joking.’
The Speaker of Mbombela Minicipality, Jimmy Mohlala (ANC), today conveyed his condolences 'on behalf of the Municipality and the community of Mbombela to the ID and Elvis' family.'
'We are going to miss in particular his robust debate in the council and his concerns about service delivery, especially water and roads, in the rural communities. He was a very humble and a dedicated Councillor and we will all miss him.'
The funeral will be on Saturday.
