De Lille – civil servants deserve more than 6%

ID President Patricia de Lille has extended her support to South
Africa’s teachers, nurses and police in their efforts to get government
to give them ‘a decent salary.
‘Civil servants are the backbone of our society and in terms of
their contribution to our nation they should be paid more. However, the
ID would like to see better performance evaluations for civil
servants because a few useless individuals are giving them all a bad
name,’ De Lille says.
‘Government must live up its promise to improve the lives of our
public servants, especially the hundreds of thousands of nurses,
teachers and police, by giving them an increase that is above
inflation,’ De Lille says.
‘Government has repeatedly said they should be paid more and that
their working conditions should be improved so as to attract more
skilled people into these essential professions. Now that it finally
has the opportunity to do so, it is revealing that its political
statements have all been hollow rhetoric,’ says De Lille.
‘In an era of budget surpluses and revenue overruns the ID
believes we can afford to improve the lives of our most valued public
servants.
‘The government’s stubborn refusal to budge on its 6% wage offer
could lead to one of the largest public union strikes in our country’s
history and government will be to blame.’
