De Lille/Greyling - ID letter to Speaker urges action on ‘5-months late’ Crime Summit
11H30, 5 July 2007 ID Chief Whip Lance Greyling has delivered a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete, urging her to get ‘Parliament to convene a Summit on the issues of Crime, Poverty and Transformation,’ as instructed by the President 5 months ago.
ID President Patricia de Lille, speaking two days ago after the release
of the Government’s latest crime statistics, said President Mbeki, in
his Final Response to the State of the Nation Address in February this
year, had ‘listened to the ID call for a crime summit.’
He had consequently instructed Parliament to convene a summit on crime, poverty and transformation.
‘Now, almost five months later, the summit is not even on the parliamentary agenda. Parliament has failed the nation,’ Ms De Lille said on Tuesday.
‘The three arms of Government must take responsibility to deal with the issue of crime for once and for all,’ she added.
Greyling’s letter (below), says,
‘It is vitally important that the people of South Africa are brought on board in terms of tackling these issues and that their ideas, creativity and experience in this regard are built upon. Parliament is the ideal institution to hold such a forum and we would therefore call on you to convene such an event urgently.’
Here is his letter…
Madame Speaker
The Hon. Baleka Mbete
Speaker of Parliament
South African Parliament
4 July 2007
Dear Madam Speaker
Request for Parliament to Convene a Summit on Crime, Poverty and Transformation
The Independent Democrats would like to urgently request Parliament to convene a Summit on the issues of Crime, Poverty and Transformation. This Summit arises out of President Mbeki’s Final Response to the State of the Nation Address, in which he reacted to the ID’s call for a Crime Summit by instructing Parliament to convene a Summit on Crime, Poverty and Transformation.
It has been five months since the President called on Parliament to hold such a Summit and there has to date been no progress on the issue. The Independent Democrats would therefore like to know whether you are able to update us on any plans concerning the holding of such a Summit and when this event would possibly take place. The Independent Democrats feels that such a Summit is long overdue, particularly given the current mood amongst the people on these issues.
It is vitally important that the people of South Africa are brought on board in terms of tackling these issues and that their ideas, creativity and experience in this regard are built upon. Parliament is the ideal institution to hold such a forum and we would therefore call on you to convene such an event urgently.
I look forward to your response.
Kind Regards
Lance Greyling, MP
Chief Whip
Independent Democrats
