ID President Patricia de Lille is in Egypt to attend The Second
High Level Meeting for the Arab-African Initiative for the Millennium
Development Goals.
Joining the ID President will be, amongst others, Nobel Peace
Prize recipient Dr Muhammad Yunus - a Bangladeshi banker and economist.
‘He is famous for his successful application of the concept of
microcredit, the
extension of small loans to entrepreneurs
too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. In 2006,
Yunus and the bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace
Prize, ‘for their efforts to create economic and social
development from below,’ reads the invitation.
Ms De Lille was invited by Hamdi Saleh, the Egyptian Ambassador to
South Africa, on behalf of the Arab Women Investors Union.
The Forum will be hosted by the First Lady of Egypt, H.E. Mrs
Suzanne Mubarak and will be attended by a variety of members of the
Egyptian royal family.
‘This invitation is yet another sign that the international
profile of the Independent Democrats is growing,’ Ms De Lille
says.
‘This is borne out of the fact that, of all the political parties
in South Africa, the ID enjoys recognition because of our principles
and policies.
‘The ID is taking its place alongside other like-minded social
democrats from around the world that have made it their job to struggle
for the upliftment of the world’s poor,’ says De Lille.
The meetings will run until Wednesday this week.
