Floor crossing – ‘they leave only with their jackets’

27 -08-2007, 10H00, ID Chief Whip Lance Greyling, in a statement on the upcoming floor crossing period, says ‘whether we win, lose or break even, the Independent Democrats will continue to double our votes at the ballot box in each new election.’

Greyling says ‘the ID regards the upcoming floor crossing period as a cleansing and attrition process, where we will rid ourselves of all the rotten apples in our party.

‘It is only those who have no support in our country’s communities who are tempted by money and greed. Those who stay with us do so because they take their duty to the people seriously,’ says Greyling.

‘Those who leave the ID therefore leave only with their jackets. Their communities will give us their support in 2009.

‘This was proved with the last crossing of the floor in 2005, when certain people crossed the floor, but the ID went on to double its votes in the 2006 Municipal Elections,’ Greyling says.

‘With every person who crosses the floor from the ID, we will gain several thousand votes in 2009.

‘The public representatives who come to us are different. We have not offered them money and the only reason they come to us is because they want to be part of our vision of bridging the divides between the rich and the poor and providing economic freedom to our people,’ says Greyling.

‘Our stand on floor crossing is very clear – it is a constitutional right, but experience has shown us that this right has been abused by cheque book politics and greed.

‘Some people cross the floor because of their conscience and principles, like the President of the Independent Democrats, Patricia de Lille, who crossed the floor from the PAC on the basis of conscience and principles.

‘President De Lille is the only politician to date who formed a new political party and stood for elections (in 2004) and won seats at national, provincial and local level.’

‘After 2009 the 13 political parties now in Parliament will be reduced to 5 or 6, with the ID being the only big party that will prove that we are here to stay,’ Greyling says.
