ID National Congress – Tsamai and Grindrod are ID Deputy-Presidents
08-07-2007, 14h30 Delegates at the ID National Congress, held this weekend at the University of the Western Cape, have this afternoon elected their leaders for the next four years.
ID President Patricia de Lille said she had faith in the abilities ‘of
these talented leaders, who represent the diverse demographics of our
country. I am particularly pleased that 50% of our new leadership are
women.’
‘We are clearly bridging the divides within the leadership of our party,’ Ms De Lille said.
The new leaders of the ID are:
Deputy-Presidents:
Agnes Tsamai - Chairperson of the ID in North West Province. Ma-Agnus is from Lethabong near Rustenburg. During the struggle one of her vehicles was impounded when her and her husband were caught transporting ANC Umkhonto we Sizwe cadres to the Botswana border. She joined the ID in 2004 and under her command the ID tripled its representation in councils in North West Province, which has the fastest growing membership in the country.
Simon Grindrod – Cape Town ID Mayoral Committee Member for Economic, Social Development and Tourism. Mr Grindrod is the leader of the ID in Cape Town and has had a significant impact on the party’s phenomenal growth in that city. He serves on the Khayelitsha Community Trust in addition to the committees of several other community initiatives.
Secretary-General:
Haniff Hoosen – member of the ID National Executive Committee and Chairperson of the Councillor’s Forum. Mr Hoosen, who serves on the ID’s National Disciplinary and Fundraising committees, worked as an organiser for the National Party at the age of 19-years. Thereafter he became the youngest candidate to Parliament in 1994 and served as an Exco Councillor in the Durban Metro Council. He joined the ID in September 2005 and ran the party’s Municipal Election campaign last year.
National Policy Convenor:
Lance Greyling, Chief Whip of the ID in Parliament.
Women’s Agenda:
Rose Gudluza, an ID MPL in the Gauteng Legislature. The Women’s Agenda was her brainchild and she has been its leader since its inception.
Chairperson of the Young Independent Democrats:
Tarisai Simona Mchuchu, a law student at the University of Cape Town, where she has also been tasked with running the rapidly growing ID branch. Ms Mchuchu is the President of the Black Law Students Forum.
National Chairperson:
Mervyn Cirota, the current National Treasurer. Mr Cirota works as an attorney and is a Councillor for the ID in Johannesburg.
National Treasurer:
Schalk Lubbe, a Member of the National Executive Committee who holds a Diploma from the Certified Bookkeepers of South Africa.
Deputy Secretary-General:
Lillian Matlhoahela, an ID MP in the National Council of Provinces.
National Organiser:
Joe Mcgluwa, a Councillor in the Cape Town Metro.
