ID takes Ward 27 with ‘compassion, care and service to the community’
27-06-2007, 23H30 The Independent Democrats has taken Amstelhof, in the Drakenstein Municipality (Ward 27), away from the ANC in a by-election held there today.
An ecstatic ID President Patricia de Lille says ‘it is a phenomenal
victory for our unstoppable young party.
‘This is proof that the ANC and the DA, with all their resources and strategies and expensive research and surveys can be beaten,’ says Ms De Lille.
‘The Independent Democrats has beaten them with compassion, care and service to the community.’
The new ID Councillor in the Ward is Conrad Poole, a long time community worker. Poole was born in the area.
During last year’s Municipal Elections in the Ward the ID gathered 559 votes, the ANC 777 and the DA 333. This time round the ID jumped up almost 200 votes to 727, the ANC dropped to 611 and the DA got 334.
Just last month the Independent Democrats experienced an unprecedented 1000% increase in its voter base in a by-election in Riviersonderend.
‘I said it then and I will say it again - it has become clear that the ID will be canvassing for the Government of the Western Cape in 2009,' De Lille says.
In Riviersonderend, the ID had 38 votes last year, but last month that number shot up to 401.
‘More and more of our people are joining the Independent Democrats - they have come home to the ID.
‘This is a powerful sign of things to come,’ De Lille says.
