Patricia de Lille - ‘they are tired of corruption, nepotism and tenders being given to ANC cronies’

03-06-2007 ID President Patricia de Lille was the keynote speaker at yet another ID provincial congress this weekend, this time in North West. Ms De Lille, who was welcomed on stage by traditional Tswana dancers, says the Independent Democrats ‘is going from strength to strength in the province’.

‘In 2004 the ID got 6000 votes and in 2006 that figure went up to 17 000. It is particularly pleasing to see that the majority of these voters are black South Africans that have left the ANC and make the ID their political home,’ De Lille says.

‘They are tired of corruption, nepotism and tenders being given to ANC cronies.’

Delegates from 54 branches elected the North West Provincial Executive Committee at the Congress. Agnes Tsamai, an ID Councillor in Rustenburg, was elected Chairperson of the province, while Harold Mcgluwa is Secretary.

The Northern Cape and North West ID congresses were held in preparation for the party’s Policy Conference next weekend and the National Executive Conference, which takes place on the 7th and 8th July 2007 at the University of the Western Cape.

‘The ID will continue to consolidate its growth in all provinces,’ De Lille says.

At the Northern Cape Provincial Congress last weekend Sampie Cloete was elected the ID Chairperson and Siena Lewis was made Secretary.

In the Northern Cape in 2004 the ID got 23 000 votes, while in 2006 this shot up to 69 000. There are 81 branches in the province.

‘We are also have public representatives in all five districts of the Northern Cape. At the conference I made it clear that the ID will definitely be the official opposition in the Northern Cape by 2009,’ says De Lille.

The Northern Cape will have the second highest number of voting delegates -121, including 2 MPs - at the ID’s National Executive Conference.

The Western Cape Province has the largest number of delegates, with 256 attending the National Conference. A total of 600 delegates will be in Cape Town for this historic event.
