WORKER’S DAY 01st May 2007 - CELEBRATING THE SAFETY RIGHTS OF WORKERS
01-05-2007. As we take time today to commemorate Worker’s Day as the ID we CHOOSE to FOCUS on the RIGHTS of the worker in the workplace in terms of Health and Safety, beyond the fall of our ex-political leaders that sacrificed their lives to ensure our Democracy. There are workers DAILY in our Country that PAY a costly price for their safety.
As we take time today to commemorate Worker’s Day as the ID we CHOOSE
to FOCUS on the RIGHTS of the worker in the workplace in terms of
Health and Safety, beyond the fall of our ex-political leaders that
sacrificed their lives to ensure our Democracy. There are workers DAILY
in our Country that PAY a costly price for their safety. As the
ID we DEDICATE this day to the countless numbers of workers that go to
work in conditions that result in both injury and death, with limited
knowledge of their Constitutional Rights to a safe and healthy
WORKPLACE. On average per annum there are at least 450 000
workers that are maimed and at least 900 reported DEATHS in our
workplaces. The GREATEST tragedy is that MANY workers AND their
FAMILIES are UNAWARE of their RIGHT to COMPENSATION. There is provision
in Legislation for R8000 to be made IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE per worker in
the event of a DEATH, but MANY families struggle to bury their dead in
DIGNITY. Workplace SAFETY must be placed firmly on the agenda to
ENSURE the ADVANCEMENT of the RIGHTS of workers. As the ID we will be
engaging with the prescripts of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
as well as the Compensation of Occupational Health and
Safety Act to:
1.
Ensure WORKPLACE safety across industries;
2.
Ensure that when WORKERS are injured they RECEIVE QUALITY treatment;
3.
That they are COMPENSATED in terms of INJURIES;
4.
That in the event of DEATH that their FAMILIES are PAID IMMEDIATELY;
As the ID we will make our RESOURCES available for the
advancement of worker rights in terms of Safety. In the event that
workers suffer injuries and await compensation as well as workers that
have been injured and are awaiting compensation, send a fax to 021 403
2350. The ID has launched a SPECIFIC CAMPIAGN for WORKER SAFETY
RIGHTS and further information WILL be made AVAILABLE in the Press –
please look out for details.
