ID GAUTENG WANTS JOHANNESBURG TO PROVIDE HAWKERS AT JABULANI MALL WITH SECURE STANDS
13H50, 14 OCTOBER 2008
Rose Gudlhuza, ID MPL in Gauteng, has called on the City of
Johannesburg to provide hawkers at Jabulani Mall, Soweto, with secure
stands.
Gudlhuza's call comes after media reports today said metro police had had a violent confrontation with hawkers at Jabulani.
'The Independent Democrats understands the need to enforce by-laws, but it is also vital that a balance is struck with the needs of informal traders, whose livelihoods depend on this income,' Ms Gudlhuza says.
'Secure stands will ensure that this sort of entrepreneurial involvement in the economy is sustained for the good of the traders and our broader economy.
'The mall belongs to the people of Jabulani, so people cannot be told all of a sudden not to trade there. To some this is the only way they can provide for their children and we need to be sensitive to their needs,' says Gudlhuza.
