Rodney Lentit, the ID Western Cape Provincial Secretary has conveyed
his condolences to the Yawani family, who lost three children in an
alleged drunk driving incident at the weekend and called on law
enforcement agencies ‘to act harshly against those who drive under the
influence of alcohol.’
On Saturday, the three siblings, 5-year-old Mihle Yawani and twins Sankelo and Nasiphe Yawani, aged 6, were playing on a sidewalk in Phelendaba, George when the 46-year-old allegedly drunk driver lost control of his vehicle and drove into a lamppost, after which hit the three children. All three died at the scene.
‘It is unacceptable that innocent people are losing their lives due to irresponsible drivers who are driving under the influence of alcohol,’ Mr Lentit says.
‘We are calling on the courts to act harshly against the perpetrator involved in this incident, and ensure that he is brought to book immediately.
‘Furthermore, we in the Independent Democrats are calling on all law enforcement agencies to do their utmost to keep drunk drivers off our roads, for the safety of all our people, including our children,’ says Lentit.
‘We also want to urge communities who know of drunk drivers in their area to report them to the authorities immediately, to prevent them from being a menace on our roads.’
