ID Deputy-President Agnes Tsamai has intervened in a crisis in Ratlou
Municipality in the North West Province after residents approached her
because they are not receiving water and electricity.
‘We in the Independent Democrats will be meeting with the executive mayor of the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, Themba Gwabeni, tomorrow at 11H00 to discuss the situation and pressurize the municipality into solving this problem, which is having a negative impact on thousands of our people,’ Ms Tsamai says.
The meeting will take place in the Mayor’s office in Masikeng.
‘With the arrival of summer the situation is worsening by the day. At least 2000 RDP houses have been without water and electricity since the families moved into their homes in 2006,’ says Tsamai.
‘It appears that the Ratlou Municipality failed to budget for the provision of water and electricity to these families and we want this situation to be sorted out immediately.
‘On the issue of housing we in the Independent Democrats have been very clear – we do not believe in simply building houses, we believe in creating proper communities, which includes the provision of basic services and the construction of schools and clinics,’ Tsamai says.
The ID Deputy-President says the municipality has trucked in water erratically, ‘but this is unacceptable and the ID wants water to be trucked in on a daily basis until the community is hooked up to the piped water supply.
‘The Mayor told me he was not aware of the situation despite repeated efforts by the community to get the municipality to act,’ Tsamai says.
The residents have documented proof of their correspondence with the municipality.
All members of the media are invited to attend.
