ID WESTERN CAPE CONDEMNS TAXI OPERATORS’ BEHAVIOUR
9 DECEMBER 2008-Rodney Lentit, ID Western Cape Provincial Secretary, has condemned some taxi operators’ behaviour in the City of Cape Town and has cautioned them ‘to refrain from all forms of violence.’
Rodney Lentit, ID Western Cape Provincial Secretary, has condemned some
taxi operators’ behaviour in the City of Cape Town and has cautioned
them ‘to refrain from all forms of violence.’
Mr Lentit’s comments come after taxi operators took to the streets in Du Noon, Milnerton, Delft and Khayelitsha, where passing cars and buses were stoned.
The taxi operators are unhappy over government’s proposed Rapid Bus Transport (RBT) system, which they claim will negatively affect the taxi industry.
‘The Independent Democrats is calling on all role-players in the public transport industry and Government to urgently meet, so that an amicable solution can be found to this situation,’ says Lentit.
‘This morning’s incidents caused havoc across the City and many people were inconvenienced, arriving at work late.
‘Government has assured the taxi industry that the same process being followed to improve the city’s bus transport system will also take place within the taxi industry,’ but we are calling on taxi operators to refrain from any violence,’ Lentit says.
‘Violence is never a solution and we are also calling on Government to sit down with the taxi industry, so that they too can be informed about how the new system will affect them.’
