14H00, 14 June 2007 Honourable Speaker, this bill attempts to balance the rights of freedom of expression with the rights of children. This was never going to be an easy task and from the beginning the bill was mired in controversy. It must be said that there have certainly been some improvements made to the original bill, such as the restoration of exemptions. These exemptions, however, only apply to members of the Newspapers Association of South Africa. There are roughly 500 other publications in the country who are not members and will have to comply with some very onerous conditions laid down by the Act.

Motion with regard to Human Rights month in terms of rule 107 (1)
2007-03-06. As we all know our democratic constitution has been in place for over ten years, but what perhaps is less well known is that crime statistics show that 90% of South Africans will be victims of crime. This directly shows that 90% of South Africans are being denied their human right ‘to freedom and security of the person’.
Members’ Statement: Avril Harding
2006-10-11. Despite its strong objections to the Lottery, Cosatu has emerged as one of the major shareholders in Gidani, the consortium recently awarded the license to operate the national lottery.
The Challenge of fatalities and injuries on our country's roads
2006-09-20. The challenges of fatalities and injuries on our country roads are becoming an increasingly major problem in this country. The points raised by some of my honourable colleagues are indeed very important, but I would however like to in the limited amount of time afforded to me, draw this house’s attention to an aspect of road injury which is often overlooked and misunderstood.
This is a copy of ID MP Lance Greyling’s speech on previous allegations made by Minister Erwin’s on sabotage
2006-09-20. The ID finds this all completely absurd. We would like to know why parliament’s time has to be continually used up to settle scores between these two parties when all that is actually required is a simple apology.
This is a copy of the Member’s Statement delivered in Parliament today by ID MP Vincent Gore. In it, Mr Gore calls on President Mbeki to exert whatever pressure he can on the African Union to halt the withdrawal of peacekeeping troops from the Sudan’s Dar
2006-09-20. The Rwandan genocide 12 years ago, which left many millions dead and many more suffering, has very important lessons for the African continent as a whole, and South Africa in particular.
Initiatives to combat rural poverty
2006-09-12. I have only a minute to put forward the ID’s suggestions on combating youth and rural poverty, so let me begin. Firstly, the government needs to prioritise the rural areas and develop a comprehensive rural development strategy. Such a strategy must put emphasis on rural people’s livelihoods and how their natural asset base can be used to deal with the worst affects of poverty. I have seen places of despair and malnutrition turn into thriving and healthy areas through the simple provision of training in organic agriculture.
Discussion: “Non-payment of Maintenance Orders for the Maintenance of children and Problems related thereto”
2006-09-07. It has been almost 6 years since the Maintenance Act of 1998 was passed, and still this law is not doing justice to the paper it is printed on. Apart from there being so many women that are not even aware of this legislation, independent research has found that the non-performance of maintenance payments through the Courts, when measured against the current active record set, ranges between 65 and 90%. This simply means that women are not receiving the money that they should. And at this point in time, it is still unclear how many maintenance orders have been granted.
Conflict in the Middle East
2006-08-17. ‘What is happening in the Middle East is an indictment on the whole world. What the Middle East needs is peace and not more war. The Independent Democrats has always stood on a platform from where human rights abuses must be condemned wherever they occur in the world. In light of our own history of human rights violations, as South Africans we should be the first to condemn these abuses.
Debate: trafficking of women and children
2006-08-15. The trafficking of women and children is a global multibillion dollar industry. It is second only to guns and drugs in terms of the money that is earned through illicit activities. South Africa has unfortunately also been brought into this illicit web. As a country we need to play a leading role in stamping out these activities, which occur both across our borders and within our borders.
Fifa Special Measures Bills
2006-08-15. The two FIFA Special Measures Bills before this house today are crucial for South Africa’s preparation for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Despite the technical nature of the two bills, it is essential that they be viewed as an integral part of this country’s commitment to this tournament. These bills will serve to cement the assurances South Africa gave to FIFA’s World Governing Body in order to be awarded the privilege of hosting. It is essential to the success of the tournament that all South Africans and all sectors of the South African society rally behind this initiative.
YiD National Executive Member Riaan April in Youth Parliament
Not only is the concept of equal rights a fundamental aspect of the South African Constitution, but it is also embedded in the Freedom Charter. And while big parts of the Freedom Charter have been blatantly ignored by the ruling party, we have a very real chance to turn many of our constitutional rights into a reality.
