ID MP JOE MC GLUWA SPEECH- 2010 HERITAGE DAY CELEBRATIONS

24 SEPTEMBER 2010-“CELEBRATING 2010 FIFA SOCCER WORLD CUP SUCCESS: OUR HERITAGE”

“CELEBRATING 2010 FIFA SOCCER WORLD CUP SUCCESS: OUR HERITAGE”

Your Excellency President Jacob Zuma, Hon Ministers, Hon Premier Zweli Mkhize,Hon members of Parliament, leaders of Political Parties, His worship the Mayor of Durban Cllr Obed Mlaba, friends and colleagues.

It is Heritage Day that allows us to come together to heal the wounds of our past by recognising the beauty of our diverse history and identities. It gives us the opportunity to reflect on the victories attained during the harshest of times and in the face of pure oppression on our people.

It is a day to acknowledge the sunshine that has come out of a tragic past and to remember those people who gave their time and lives to fight for us to have this heritage.

We have done it in 1994.
We have done it again in the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
We have done it on AFRICAN SOIL!

South Africa’s success in hosting the 2010 World Cup comes from a great team effort by government, politicians, civil society and businesses. However, for me the beauty of the World Cup and the strongest message that we gave to the world was that we came together, with all our diversities and different struggles - celebrating our nation as one.

The world took a step back in amazement of the beauty that our diversity had created in our young democracy.

But this was not only about impressing the rest of the world, it was about proving to ourselves what we can achieve when we stand together, united in our resolve, to build a better future for our children.

Heritage is not only just about history it is about the kind of country and society that we are all involved in, in building a better future.
We must continue to use these tools to attain social cohesion to ensure that our children can be afforded such opportunities and also feel proud on Heritage Day. Heritage must be used beyond sports events.

As a Government we must rally behind those businesses and banks that are bold enough to criticize sporting administrations for not ensuring that they are truly representative of all races in all codes of sport in South Africa.

Mr President I want to encourage you to rally more support for the ONE Goal Global Education Campaign so that even the six year old “Anele” from the rural township of Boitekong in Rusternburg, can one day realize her dream of becoming a nuclear scientist.

This must become our heritage when we look back in fifty years time.

Ke nako!

I thank you
