Budget Vote Speech on Home Affairs By Christopher Wang, MP
2004-06-24. Hon Deputy Speaker, Hon Minister, Hon Deputy Minister congratulation on your new appointment. The Independent Democrats look forward in working with you with the challenges ahead of this chaotic department.
HANIS Project, now the HANIS Reloaded. ID support the initiative and
expect the new system that will be re-launched this year will greatly
speed up the delivery of identification document or card to our people
as there are still millions of South Africans without an ID book!
This department is extremely important for the entire nation and we understand that this department has to deal with many structural and organizational wrongs of the past. It is therefore imperative that we work together to address those past deficiencies.
As always, I like to cite my own experience: I lost my ID, applied for re-issue, and still waiting; now I keep my Parliamentary card with me at all time in case something goes wrong and I end up in Lindela Repatriation Centre. Therefore I certainly expect the new system delivers much faster, after so much money and resources had spent on this project.
ID would also like to commend the IEC for their effort in this election and would like to see more aggressive registration campaign in the coming local election, especially focus on providing more access to our youth in the election process. We were happy to see that IEC made an effort to setup registration point at student campus around the country.
Lastly, the Independent Democrats are greatly disturbed by the level of corruption in Home Affairs and is now glad to know that the Minister is committed to rectify the situation, we wish her well.
I thank you.
