Young ID'ers
The Independent Democrats believe that young people in South Africa are leading the way in shaping our new democratic society.
| Unlike other political parties, ID does not believe in relegating young people to second-class members through structures such as the youth wing. Our philosophy is simple, if you are old enough to vote, you are old enough to occupy leadership positions in the Independent Democrats and play an influential role in defining its policies and approach to issues. If an issue is important to a young South African, then it is important to the ID and we will ensure that it is reflected in our policies and political campaigns. | ![]() |
Politicians often repeat the mantra
that the youth are the future of this country. ID believes that not
only are you the future, but you are also our present. In almost every
field, young South Africans are showing themselves to be pioneers and
are redefining old disciplines. It is for this reason that the
Independent Democrats want young South Africans to play a defining role
in this party and shake up some of the old, traditional ways in which
politics operates in South Africa.
As a young party, ID believes that it is the perfect vehicle to take forward the aspirations and attitudes of South Africa’s youth. In order to do this, however, we need you to get involved and challenge us with your issues and ideas. Too many politicians in South Africa like to speak on behalf of the youth, and believe that they can define this sector as a single entity. ID believes that if there is a defining characteristic of the youth in South Africa it is its diversity. We therefore want to hear from all the different groupings of young South Africans so that our policies can reflect the full spectrum of young ID’ers.
The Independent Democrats are committed to ensuring that young South Africans make the most of the opportunities within the party. We will provide training and support to help young people maximise their potential in the political arena.
One of the first issues we would like to hear your views on is how you would like to be defined. We believe that the term youth fails to capture the essence of South Africa’s 18 – 35 generation. It is high time that this age group gets to choose how it wishes to be seen and we would welcome any suggestions you have on this. You can SMS your comments to 33811 or e-mail us at contactus@id.org.za The best term or phrase that is submitted will then become the way that ID defines this grouping in society.
